I investigate the effectiveness of employee activism in the technology sector by examining various macro and micro factors, including opportunity structures, tactics, frames, online participant engagement, and outcomes. My interdisciplinary research integrates insights from the social movement and activism literatures across organization and management sciences, political science, information systems, and communication fields. I employ a multi-method approach, utilizing in-depth case studies of specific instances of employee activism in tech companies alongside quantitative analysis of social media data to analyze activist frames and explain activism effectiveness. In my dissertation I argue that the effectiveness of activism is influenced by multiple factors such as opportunity structures, activist and firm tactical interactions, and activist frames and participant engagement on social media. I propose evaluating activism effectiveness across multiple dimensions of mobilization, management response, and social impact.
